Plan Christmas Vacation:

Objective: Students will use planning and writing skills.
Resources: Teacher: calendar. Student: pencil, paper, calculator.
Teacher Preparation: none.

Procedure:
1. On the chalkboard, draw a large version of your calendar, covering the time for Christmas vacation.
2. Have students think about their family's plans for the vacation.
3. Day by day, have students make up a rough schedule of what they will be doing during the vacation. Younger students can work in large blocks of time like morning, afternoon and evening, while older students can work in hours.

Variations/Options: Keep journals during vacation; for trips calculate distances and time needed for completion; calculate amount of gas needed for trips; estimate amount of television to be watched; schedule homework so it will be done on time.
